Zoom H5
Description: This portable recorder is very similar to the H4n that is also available from the HDMZ. It has an MSH-6 mid side microphone setup as well as two XLR/TRS inputs on the bottom. Like the H4n it also records in WAV and MP3 which are stored on an SD card within the device. We currently have 8 of the Zoom H5 available to borrow and it is recommended that you use the H5 if available rather than the H4n or H4.

Description: The Rode Stereo Video Mic Pro is a microphone that is, obviously, made for video recording. Song Meter SM3
Description: The Song Meter SM3 is what is known as a bat recorder. The device has the ability to be programmed to record at certain times of the day if left alone. It is also relatively weatherproof allowing it to be programmed and left to record outdoors over extended periods of time. It also has the ability to record at high high frequencies, up to 384kHz. This is what gained it the name “bat recorder” since it can be used to record the high pitch screeches of bats that are beyond our hearing range.

Description: An extremely directional mic that is meant to be held and aimed. Used in professional sporting events to pick up sounds from on the field. Can be used here however to pick up things such as birds in trees.

JrF Contact Mic
Description: The JrF contact mic can be attached to a surface for a unique recording. Attaching it to various objects can capture the vibrations of their movement adding another element to a prospective recording. For both available JrF microphones it is recommended that you run them into microphone preamps. Others claim to have better results using them with DI boxes.
